While you don't have to specify the VIN, this help body shops get the exact information about your car, and therefore locate and price replacement parts, paint etc.
The body shops cannot track you using the VIN so it is perfectly safe.
The car's VIN is attached to the panel on the top of the dashboard of your can and can typically be seen from the outside of the car.
